The basics of Minecraft server hosting!

So, a lot of you must play on SMP servers, but not many really fit your needs. You sometimes wonder to yourself how it would be if you had your very own server! Well, in this basic tutorial, you will learn just how to do the things you might not know how to do with server hosting!

Now, one thing you should know, having a home hosted Minecraft server is bad, but it's free. If you can afford a few bucks per month, you should definately check out some GSPs (Game Service Providers) They host the server for you, and some can even take care of it, etc. To find a GSP that suits your needs, use : http://www.bestminecrafthosts.com/top/

When you have a server and you are all set up, there is one last thing you should do. There are two types of servers, a "Vanilla" server which has no mods and is pure Minecraft and then "Bukkit" servers which have plugins that make it more fun, easier to handle etc.
If you want to host a Bukkit server, your game provider will let you choose between Vanilla and Bukkit, choose Bukkit.

Now you can go to http://plugins.bukkit.org/ and get all the plugins you like! Most of them have installation instructions. 90% of them just have you download a .jar, place it in your server's plugin folder, and voila! When you reload the server (/reload) it will generate the needed files! You're good to go!

Have fun!
